Link for 1/7 – Oh Gilbert, Gilbert, Gilbert

By now you’ve probably heard all about the scandal surrounding Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas and his teammate Javaris Crittenton.  Yesterday, league commissioner David Stern suspended Arenas indefinitely.  According to league sources, Stern made the decision to act now rather than wait out the investigation because Arenas has been treating the whole incident as a joke.  And it’s hard to argue with that assessment when you see a picture like this one

At best this incident can be chalked up to a really bad joke.  However, the idea of NBA players having loaded guns in a crowded arena is a scary one (especially when you think back on some of the temper tantrums players have thrown).  Kudos to Stern for acting swiftly on this one and sending a strong message to the rest of the league.

  1. Yes, Areanas’ argument that he felt safer with the firearms at the area versus at home is really puzzling.

  2. its terrible PR of course, but I suspect this is going to really help the Wizards in the long run. They might be able to void Gilbert’s awful contract, which frees them up to trade Jamison and Butler, tank for Wall…and have some coin for 2010, 2011.

  3. You are right Matt. I think the problem is going to be that, as we learn more, it is going to make players think twice about wanting to be a part of that locker room. Especially as we learn today that Crittenton may have loaded and cocked his weapon during the dispute. If I were a FA, I would think long and hard before I agreed to join that locker room…
